Special Situations

CORE:
First-year students are required to complete CORE 101 during their first semester and CORE 102 during their second semester. (Transfer students with 6.86 units or more of credit are exempt from the CORE requirement and need not register for CORE 101.) Each section of CORE is worth 1 unit of credit. You must register yourself for a section of CORE 101 during the summer registration period. If you do not, the Registrar's Office will register you at the end of the summer registration period. After the summer registration, you will not be able to change your CORE section via BannerWeb. Any changes must be made in person with the CORE course coordinator and will only be made for extremely unusual and extraordinary circumstances.

Wellness 085: URAware and Wellness 090: topics
All new students must complete the WELL 085 requirement as soon as possible after enrollment.  First-year students are required to complete the non-credit WELL 085: URAware in their first semester. Students must also complete two WELL 090 topics courses before the end of sophomore year (or as soon as possible for transfer students). WELL 085 generally meets once or twice during the semester on special dates listed on the schedule of classes. After registering for your credit-bearing classes, you should add WELL 085 to your schedule. If you do not do so, the Registrar’s Office will register you for a section of WELL 085 prior to orientation. Students who have not satisfactorily completed WELL 085 by registration for the spring semester of their second year will have an administrative hold put on their record and will not be able to register until they have made arrangements to take the class.

Library/Information Skills: LIB 100 and 101
All students must complete the non-credit Library/Information Skills class in their first year. LIB 100 is to be completed in the fall and LIB 101 in the spring. Each class generally meets once during the semester on special dates listed on the schedule of classes. After registering for your credit-bearing classes, you should add LIB 100 to your schedule. If you do not do so, the Registrar’s Office will register you for a section of LIB 100 prior to orientation. . Students who have not satisfactorily completed both LIB 100 and 101 by registration for the fall semester of their third year will have an administrative hold put on their record and will not be able to register until they have made arrangements to take the class.

Second Languages
All students are required to meet the COM2 requirement by demonstrating proficiency in a second language. Students are encouraged to complete the COM2 requirement during the first year. If you decide to register for a modern second language for the Fall 2008 semester, you must register at the appropriate level. See the information on language placement for more information.  And remember: Any student who has previously completed 3–4 years of a second language may not register for the elementary level of that language. Those who do so will be dropped from the elementary class at the end of the pre-registration period.

Language Practices, Labs, and Link Errors
Some classes, particularly beginning and intermediate languages, have practice or lab sections associated with the lecture section. To register for such classes, you must register for both the lecture and accompanying practice/lab at the same time. For example, if you are registering for Latin American and Iberian Studies 121 Section 1, you must simultaneously register for Practice 1A or 1B in order to be registered at all. If you do not choose a lab/practice section or choose a lab/practice section other than that associated with the lecture, you will receive a link error message and will not be registered in either the lecture or the lab/practice.

Closed Sections and Departmental Overrides
Classes that have reached their seating capacity are closed and will have a “C” in the “Select” column. If you try to register for a closed section using its CRN, you will receive an error message. You may seek departmental approval for a seating capacity override if a particular course you would like to take is full. Only the appropriate department chair has the authority to grant registration special approval for seating capacity overrides or any other restrictions (major, class, prerequisites, etc). Department chairs will be available during your orientation session and the two week drop/add period if you wish to discuss registration special approvals. A list of department chairs may be found in the Contact Us area of this site. Overrides and special approvals are done at the discretion of each individual department.

Prerequisites
Some classes have prerequisites that must be completed prior to registration. Prerequisites may be found by clicking the CRN of the desired course in the "Look Up Classes to Add" results, or in the online catalog at http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/catalog/undergraduate/index.html (see individual course descriptions for prerequisites). If you have not completed the exact prerequisite as listed in the catalog, you may seek a special approval as described above once you arrive on campus.

Student Restrictions
A class with an “SR” in the left-hand column on the Look Up Classes to Add menu is restricted. The restriction may be for students of a certain class standing or students with a declared primary major in that department. Only department chairs may override such restrictions. A class with an “NR” in the left-hand column is not allowed for registration at that time.

School of Continuing Studies Classes
Any class with a number ending in “U” (e.g., ACCT 300U) is a School of Continuing Studies (SCS) course and is not available to you for on-line registration. To register for an SCS course, you will need to go to SCS. Work taken at SCS is treated as transfer work; while the credit earned will be transferred back to your undergraduate transcript, the grade will not transfer. You may not register for an SCS class prior to the first day of class. No SCS class may fulfill a general education requirement. It is up to each individual department to determine whether or not the course is applicable towards majors/minors in that department. Undergraduate students in Arts & Sciences, the Business School, and the Jepson School may apply no more than four courses of SCS courses towards their degree requirements.

Cross Listed Classes
Some classes that apply to more than one discipline are cross listed in two or more departments. Each department has a limited number of seats in the class. In some cases, it may appear that there are seats available in a cross listed class when those seats are actually filled under another department’s limit. If you are interested in registering for a cross listed class and find that it is full under one department, you may wish to attempt to register for it under its cross listed department(s).

Languages Across the Curriculum
Languages Across the Curriculum offers .25 units, pass/fail courses in a variety of languages. LAC sections are usually taught by international students or bilingual students, and they are offered in conjunction with primary courses throughout the curriculum, including the arts and sciences, business, and leadership studies.
