More on Transfer Credit

If you have taken a course from a regionally accredited college or university, received a “C” or better, and the course is similar to one offered at the University of Richmond, you may be able to receive credit for the course. Work taken through other institutions prior to enrollment is evaluated on an individual basis; not all departments will accept work taken as part of a high school program even if transcripted by an accredited institution.

The departments of biology, chemistry, economics, English, history, Latin American and Iberian studies, math, modern literatures and cultures (modern foreign languages), philosophy, physics, political science, and sociology do not accept transfer credit for work taken as part of a high school program; other departments review such work on a case-by-case basis. Keep in mind that, if your coursework does transfer, your grade will not count in your University of Richmond GPA (cumulative grade point average); only your earned units will be affected.

Students may bring in no more than 7 units of credit, including credit by examination and transfer credit, during their enrollment at Richmond (work taken on exchange and study abroad programs, approved visiting away and off-campus programs as well as courses taken through dual-degree and cross-registration programs does not count towards this limit). Additional transfer work can be entered on the transcript and can be used to fulfill prerequisite requirements, but only 7 units of credit will count toward a degree.

Students seeking approval for college courses (not AP/IB courses) taken prior to initial enrollment must complete the Transfer Work Certification form. The University must also receive an official transcript directly from the institution offering the work. Transfer evaluations are completed on a first-in first-out basis. Courses accepted for credit will be on your University of Richmond transcript, available on BannerWeb, by July 21 for transcripts received by July 7.

If you want to take a course to satisfy field-of-study credit after you have enrolled in the University, you must have the approval of the appropriate Richmond instructor and department chair before field-of-study credit is granted. A course does not have to satisfy a general education requirement in order for transfer credit to be awarded; it may be awarded general elective credit or credit for a class not meeting the general education requirement as appropriate. If you have questions about transfer policies, contact Leah Nelson, the transfer credit evaluator, in the Office of the University Registrar at (804) 289-8639.

Please note: A student may not receive credit for the same course more than once, so if you have received transfer credit for ENGL 103, you would not receive additional credit if you later take ENGL 103 at the University of Richmond.
