Study Abroad and International Education
Dear Students,
As we move further into the 21st century, study abroad continues to become an increasingly essential component of an undergraduate education. As a nation, we must equip all citizens, but especially future leaders, with global knowledge and a global world view, both of which are critical for productive work and meaningful participation in our shrinking world. Recent events in the United States and around the world have shown just how crucial cross-cultural communication and understanding are.
At the University of Richmond, we take study abroad very seriously as an integral part of progress towards a Richmond degree. With ever-greater competition in the job market, it is significant that this experience helps students to grow intellectually and personally, to mature at a rate and in ways that are quite different from those possible on the home campus. It also exposes them to various career options and equips them with many qualities and skills, and these things make them more attractive candidates for employment and graduate studies.
Those who study abroad pursue graduate studies in and outside the United States, enter medical, law, and business schools, volunteer for the Peace Corps, work for corporate business, governmental agencies and the nonprofit sector. Study abroad alumni have also been successful in Fulbright grant competitions. As you can see, there are many reasons why study abroad is a lifetime opportunity.
Each year, more than 500 Richmond students from all majors study abroad for credit in English and non-English speaking countries. Study abroad is financially feasible for all students, as tuition for Richmond semester abroad is the same as the on-campus general tuition and all Richmond financial aid can be applied toward UR study abroad programs.
Additional information about studying abroad can be found through the staff of the Office of International Education and through the Study Abroad Web site. We invite you to learn more about opportunities for semester, year, and summer study abroad. If you have questions, we will be happy to hear from you.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Uliana Gabara
