Orientation and Transition Programs

Your years at Richmond begin with orientation, or if you choose, with one of our transition programs that run just prior to orientation. In addition, we offer other interest-based programs available to all new first-year students. All of these programs are intended to help introduce students to other students, the university, and the many available resources you'll find here.

Transition Programs

About Transition Programs

These transition programs run just prior to orientation. You may only participate in one of these programs. Transition programs include Roadmap to Success, Outdoor Challenge, WC Outdoor Adventure, Multicultural Affairs Pre-Orientation, and International Student Orientation. Watch the application deadlines for these programs closely.

It IS possible to participate in a transition program and an interest-based program. See the list of interest-based programs below.

WC Outdoor Adventure (Women Only) - Application Deadline June 8

First-year women interested in outdoor adventure can participate in WC Outdoor Adventure, a combined transitional program and living-learning residential program. Following the transitional program prior to orientation, students will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor programs and trips during the semester.

Multi-Cultural Affairs Pre-Orientation - Application Deadline July 1

The Multi-Cultural Affairs Pre-Orientation program is designed to enhance the transition of incoming multiracial, Latino-Hispanic, Asian, African, and Native American students into the University.

Roadmap to Success - Application Deadline July 1

The Roadmap to Success program offers faculty-led short courses on interesting topics, combined with developmental and skill-building seminars. Roadmap for First-Year Students continues into the academic year with monthly dinners and events aimed at helping first-year students transition into the academic and social life of Richmond with greater success.

Outdoor Challenge (Men Only) - Application Deadline August 1

First-year men interested in the outdoors can apply for Outdoor Challenge, which is designed to challenge leadership and communication skills, test mental strength, and encourage teamwork.

International Orientation - (International Students Only)

All new international students must attend International Orientation, which covers important topics like immigration, health insurance, and cultural and academic adjustment.

About Interest-Based Programs
There are several programs available to students based on particular academic or residential interests. These programs include Integrated Quantitative Science (IQS) Course, R-Business Learning Community, Peer Advisors & Mentors Program, Living-Learning Programs, and the W.I.L.L. Program. It is possible to participate in one of these programs and a transition program from the list above.
Living-Learning Programs - Application Deadline June 8

In addition to traditional residential living options, the University of Richmond offers first-year students living-learning communities in which students with common interests live together and share experiences that take their education far beyond the classroom. Program options for women include Healthy Living, Moore International, Ready for Moore, WC Outdoor Adventure, and Women in Math and Science. Program options for men include Explore UR World, RC Xtreme, and Spinning UR Web. 

Peer Advisors & Mentors Program - Application Deadline June 12

The Peer Advisors and Mentors Program pairs first-year students with upper-class student mentors toward supporting adjustment, leadership, and engagement with the college experience.


R-Business Learning Community - Application Deadline July 1

A co-ed, non-residential learning community, R-Business is for first-year students interested in exploring the many facts of today’s business world.

Integrated Quantitative Science (IQS) Course - Application Deadline July 8

The IQ science course is a first-year course for prospective majors interested in an integrated introduction to biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science. It is ideal for students with wide interests across the sciences, who like working with a team on challenging problems, and who want to view big scientific societal problems from multiple disciplines.

Women Involved In Living and Learning (WILL) Program - Summer Application Deadline August 1

The nationally recognized WILL program for women explores gender and diversity issues both in and out of the classroom. Students strengthen their leadership skills as they actively work to create a more equitable world.
