Move-In Day

When should we arrive on campus to move our student into his/her room?
New resident students should arrive on campus to move in on Wednesday, August 20, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. International students need to arrive no later than Sunday, August 17. Members of our Orientation Committee will be on hand to greet you and your Richmond student, direct you to the appropriate residence hall, and answer your questions. We will not check anyone into a resident hall prior to 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.


What can I expect on Move-In day?
Please remember, unless your student is participating in a special program, no one is allowed to  check in prior to the official Move-In day. On Move-In Day, each residence hall will have a check-in station for new students. When you arrive on campus, orientation advisors will be available to give you directions to the residence hall. As a rule, there is no parking close to the residence hall. You will be asked to stop and unload the car and will then be directed to a parking area. University Facilities will provide a small number of hand trucks at their service tents. The location of the tents will be in front of Dennis Hall, near the archway of Moore Hall, across the street from the entrance to Gray Court, and behind Lora Robins Court. You will need to leave your driver’s license when you check out the equipment. Students will be asked to get in line to receive their key.


Will my student have space to store items in an area other than his/her room?
The residence halls have small storage rooms where students may store items such as luggage. The desk chair provided is the only item of furniture that may be removed from the room and placed in storage if students bring their own. Beds, if not bunked, may be raised on two horizontal cinderblocks to allow storage under the bed. Roommates should communicate with each other prior to arrival to determine who will bring the items that they may want for their room.

How long should we expect to stay during Orientation?
We have planned events for parents on Wednesday and Thursday, August 20 and 21. Most parents leave following the meeting with student orientation advisors, which is scheduled to end at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 21.
